Gateway of India, Asiatic Library, Kala Ghoda and many others are significant heritage sights that not only promote tourists but also stand as a pillar to Mumbai’s rich and flourishing past.
Do you know, around 20 lakh people remain non-notified, without legal water connections. But back in 19th and 20th century, when Bombay was emerging as a trading hub the merchants and philanthropists funded the construction of fountains called pyaus in public places out of the act of love and pity to to provide water for humans, birds and animals. These were designed to disperse water continuously especially in populated places like markets. These pyaus are now being rejuvenated not just promote tourism but also meet the needs of birds and others in need. There are in total 16 Pyaus in Mumbai mainly located in SouthMumbai.
RannSamar Foundation had filed a PIL in 2015 itself to prevent the demolition of pyaus, today, 10 years later we are extremely proud of this initiative which makes all of us respect our heritage and the thoughts of our ancestors who were so foresighted.
